KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) -- The Sessions Court today sentenced the owner of a maid agency to a total of six years jail after finding him guilty on two counts of trafficking two Filipino women four years ago.

977 Victims Of Human Trafficking Rescued From 2008 Till Now

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 29 (Bernama) -- A total of 977 victims of human trafficking were rescued and placed under Protection Order (PO) from 2008 till now.

In 2010 MAPO successfully instituted 135 cases out of 197 arrests made under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Act 2010. A total of 892 foreign nationals were initially placed under Interim Protection Order. 472 of them were eventually granted Interim Protection by the authorities.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the number of victims trafficked internally and across national borders in 1997 was 4 million.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) statistics indicates that an estimated 2 million women and children are trafficked globally each year. The proceeds from trafficking of persons amounts to US$10 billion a year.

The US government estimates that about 50,000 women and children are trafficked annually for sexual exploitation into the US, which is used as a transit country by traffickers.
