Thai Woman Charged With Trafficking 1.73kg Of Ganja

KANGAR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- A Thai woman was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with two counts of trafficking ganja weighing a total of 1.73 kilogrammes in Padang Besar on Oct 8.

Kittiya Chaiyaphuek, 27, only nodded to indicate understanding after the charges were read to her in Thai by an interpreter before Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim, but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the first charge, the woman, who works as a freelancer, is accused of trafficking in dangerous drugs, namely ganja weighing 657 grams, at the Special Passenger Inspection Unit of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) in Padang Besar at 6.15 pm on Oct 8.

She is also accused, under the second charge, of trafficking in ganja weighing 1.078 kilogrammes at the same location, date and time.

Both charges were framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234) and are punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same law, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim did not grant bail to the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, and fixed Jan 9, 2026, for mention of the case pending the chemical report.

The prosecution was conducted by Perlis Customs Department prosecuting officer Nurul Idayu Ismail, while the accused was unrepresented.
