JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized 24 tonnes of frozen chicken worth RM220,000 smuggled from Singapore after detaining a boat in Teluk Kabung jetty, Pasir Gudang here yesterday.
Acting Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone director Commander (M) Mohd Najib Sam said the 2,071 boxes of frozen chicken were found on a fibreglass boat after a joint operation with the police found it in a suspicious manner at the jetty at 2.45 pm.
"There was 12 kilogrammes (kg) of frozen chicken in each box, believed to have been smuggled in without approval,” he said in a statement today, adding that a lorry suspected to be used to carry the chicken was also seized, and the total seizures exceeded RM600,000.
A man, 59, who was the owner of the jetty, was also arrested to facilitate investigations under the Customs Act 1967, he added.
