KOTA BHARU, Oct 21(Bernama) -- A significant increase in several categories of commercial crime, including e-commerce fraud and online part-time job scams, were recorded in Kelantan in the first nine months of this year.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said said e-commerce fraud cases saw a sharp rise to 310 cases involving losses of RM2.34 million from January until September this year, from 154 cases with losses of RM1.34 million during the corresponding period last year.

“Meanwhile, online part-time job offer fraud also increased from 66 cases (RM1.45 million in losses) last year to 165 cases (RM3.43 million) this year.

“Other cybercrimes also showed a worrying upward tren, jumping from 189 cases with losses of RM4.14 million in 2024 to 344 cases totaling RM6.90 million this year,” he said at the Kelantan Police Contingent monthly assembly here today.

Mohd Yusoff said the rise in cases showed that commercial crime continued to pose a major threat and had become increasingly complex with the emergence of various new modus operandi.

He added that the police would continue to strengthen preventive strategies, enhance intelligence efforts, and expand inter-agency cooperation to curb cybercrime and safeguard the people’s economic well-being.

Turning to narcotics crime statistics, Mohd Yusoff said a total of 20,476 cases were recorded between January and September this year, a decrease of four per cent compared to 21,252 cases during the corresponding period last year.

"The arrest of narcotics offenders also decreased by five per cent, from 22,692 people in 2024 to 21,564 people this year, while the value of drug seizures increased by 69 percent, from RM14.72 million last year to RM24.83 million this year," he said.

He said the figures reflected more than just numbers, as they demonstrated the effectiveness of continuous prevention and enforcement efforts carried out by officers and personnel in the field.

"It also shows the strong commitment of the police to combating the drug menace, which is the country's number one enemy," he said

On violent crimes, he said the increasing trend still required close attention, as murder cases increased by two cases (100 per cent), rape cases increased by 17 cases (14.9 per cent), robberies without firearms increased by one case (2.4 per cent) and cases for causing injury increased by 16 cases (13.6 per cent).

“This increase requires every officer and member to remain proactive, vigilant and efficient in facing increasingly complex security challenges,” he said
